8/21/2023 0 Comments Mac hide icons on desktop![]() I started out by simply photographing each card and putting them on my desktop. I had always used 3 x 5" index cards, I would write things to do on with a magic marker each card with one thing to do and they completely cluttered my physical desk area. ![]() Space Bar Trick (instructions were not applicable to me) I can't believe no one had a simple answer on day one, what a nightmare!!!īelow is a list of other solutions I explored before just figuring it out on my own!!!!ġ. I guess I discovered this simple way to remove the file names from desktop icons. PERSONAL DETAILED NOTES: I spent several weeks on this, and after joining many groups and posting many posts, no one ever mentioned this. So if you followed my steps above what happened is that you batch sequentially renamed each icon, the renaming was just adding a lot of space bar spaces before your existing file name and automatically adding numbers 1, 2, 3 etc at the end of the original filename before the. I'm sure you've noticed before, that icons with long file names the whole file name never fully appears, so if you put enough spaces before the filename nothing will show as a file name below the icon unless you click "get info" or whatever. NOTES: I'm not a computer expert but I think the reason this works is because renaming it with the space bar puts so many spaces before the file name that it just can't appear below the icon. Press and hold down the space bar for 10 seconds (I'll explain why later). ![]() Hit delete or backspace on your keyboard one time, this will reveal your existing original file name in "example" below the "name format" bar.ġ1. Click your cursor once in the "custom format" bar to the left (notice and keep your eye on the word "example" just below the words "custom format".ġ0. To hide the icons file names while still preserving their original filename at the end, do the following.ĩ. Leave the "start numbers at" bar alone, it should already be pre-populated with the number 1.Ĩ. ![]() In the drop down to the right select "after name"ħ. Select "name and index" in the drop-down on the left.Ħ. Select "format" in the drop-down in the upper left.ĥ. You will need to select/highlight more than one icon to perform the steps below.īelow are the steps to hide ("remove") the file names from desktop icons (This actually takes less than 30 seconds).Ĥ. If you don't want "item information" to appear below your icons it can be removed by right clicking and then selecting "view options" and unchecking the box that says "show item info". Make a duplicate, copy or back up of your icons before doing this. HOW TO EASILY HIDE ("REMOVE") FILE NAMES FROM DESKTOP ICONS Or perhaps some kind of third-party app solution Or perhaps there are secret keyboard shortcuts that can be used Or perhaps there's a safe and easy way to do this with terminal Perhaps there's another keyboard key that I can use other than the space bar… Can you think of one? Here's the problem… if you rename the first one space.png and the second one space space.png and the third one space space space.png you'll tap the space bar too much and too long to put the space space space+++ label on 100 icons. space-space renaming trick that worked ( in the renaming process by simply hitting the space bar)īUT I have hundreds of these things to do icons I discovered a somewhat promising space bar. The only thing close to success I've had was this I experimented a little bit with making them alias trick but maybe I missed a step so that didn't work The filenames take up way too much vertical space and they need to be removed I've already removed the item information from each iconīUT i've been unable to easily remove the filename from below each of these 100 icons I've created approximately 100 of these "things to do" icons on my desktop To do this I'll go to TextEdit prepare the text and then hit "command-shift-4" to take a cropped screenshot of my "thing to do" note and then it appears on my desktop as a clean white square icon with the text of my thing to do in it "go to bank" PNG files and these files are basically text to image files of my "things to do" reminder notesįor example i'll create a note called "go to bank" I really need to remove the file names from my icons on my desktop they are taking up way too much vertical space
